Countless Lamborghinis and Ferraris, Bentleys and Porsches lie under thick layers of dust at airports and car parks across the United Arab Emirates.

Most major cities in the world face common problems such as unemployment, traffic jams, air pollution... but Dubai has its own problem: abandoned luxury cars are everywhere. This phenomenon has been likened to an epidemic and has become a headline around the world.

About 2,000 to 3,000 cars become abandoned each year in Dubai alone, according to Gulf News. These vehicles are abandoned by their owners and left to collect dust in the desert heat. Some are seized for traffic violations, but others are simply discarded, sometimes sitting for years before being discovered.

Photos of cars, including a million-dollar Ferrari Enzo, covered in dust have sparked a backlash on social media. Many people have criticized Dubai citizens for being so rich and insensitive to the things they own that they throw away their cars when they get bored and buy new ones.

But the truth is that many luxury cars have been abandoned due to the impact of the global financial crisis, with falling oil prices a factor, according to Carkeys. Many of those cars are owned by foreigners who came to cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi with high-paying career ambitions, but were caught in a difficult time for the United Arab Emirates.

The case of the Enzo's owner is an example. This man is a British citizen and gave up not only the supercar, but also his entire life in Dubai after a period of debt to escape the risk of being imprisoned.

Under Sharia law, defaulting on debt is considered a criminal offence. On the other hand, the UAE does not have a Bankruptcy Law, so there is no protection for those who are unfortunate enough to fall into debt. There are many cases of car owners leaving their beloved cars at the airport while trying to escape debt abroad, with the car keys still in the ignition. When these cars are discovered, the police will issue notices to find the owners. If the owners do not appear after 15 days, the cars will be confiscated.

Among the abandoned cars are models on the list of the most expensive cars in the world, such as Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, Bentley Continental, Lamborghini Aventador.
