More than 200 workers are trapped in a gold mine in South Africa.

According to AFP, emergency rescue workers said on February 16 that they feared more than 200 workers were trapped in an illegally operated gold mine in South Africa.

Werner Vermaak, a spokesperson for the private emergency rescue organization ER24, said: "We have made contact with 30 trapped miners. They told us that there are 200 others underground."

These workers descended into the mine on February 15th to illegally mine for gold beneath a cricket stadium in the Benoni district, east of Johannesburg.

Rescue teams say the workers were unable to escape after a rock fell and blocked the exit.
