Over 26 billion VND to preserve ancient pine trees in Yen Tu forest
The Prime Minister has approved the investment policy for the Project on Care and Conservation of Ancient Red Cedar Trees in Yen Tu National Forest, Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province.
This project aims to invest in, restore and conserve the ancient cedar species in Yen Tu National Forest, Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province; serving scientific research and study tours for staff, students and pupils of research institutes and universities at home and abroad.

The project will be implemented with a total investment of VND 26,255 million from 2017 to 2021. With this amount, the project management board will invest in caring for 237 ancient cypress trees; upgrading and renovating existing plant nursery infrastructure; cultivating cypress seedlings; collecting and caring for naturally regenerated trees...
The ancient pine trees are concentrated in the Am Duoc, Duong Tung and Hoa Yen pagodas of the Yen Tu relic site. According to the Yen Tu National Forest Project Management Board, of the remaining trees, there are more than 130 trees that are over 700 years old, of which 60% are sick, with many different types of diseases, some trees have broken branches, cut off sweet spots, some have worms, fungi...
About 20 trees have died or been knocked down by storms in the past few years. The deterioration of these ancient and precious trees is due to the impact of nature, time, and also to exploitation and destruction by human hands.
According to the Management Board of Yen Tu National Forest and Monument, the number of ancient red pine trees currently has poor regeneration ability, if there is no effective solution, they may become extinct.

According to the opinion stated in the submission of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, investment in the project is very necessary to contribute to the restoration, conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity values, aesthetic values of natural landscapes, special cultural and historical values at Yen Tu relic site, at the same time, promoting patriotism, environmental protection education and serving tourism and traditional festivals.
"The project will also help increase forest cover, improve the ecological environment, regulate the climate, contribute to enhancing the protective function, ensuring water resources of reservoirs in the area, serving domestic water and production of agriculture, industry, and services for the area and beautifying the environmental landscape," the project report stated.
According to the survey results of scientists, Yen Tu forest has 830 plant species, of which 38 species have been recorded in the Vietnam Red Book, including the red pine. The red pine tree is also known as the fake royal sandalwood, red pine, and was planted at the same time that the Supreme Emperor and Buddhist Emperor Tran Nhan Tong came to Yen Tu to practice and establish the Truc Lam Zen sect.
