Over 4,000 students participated in the gifted student competition.
On the morning of January 11th, 4,160 high school students began the 2012 National Excellent Student Examination in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, literature, history, geography, and foreign languages.
The Ministry of Education and Training prepares the exam questions and sends them to provinces and cities nationwide. Exam centers assign invigilators and supervisors from two or three different provinces to oversee the exams.
This year, the system of direct admission to universities and colleges will be reinstated (students who win third prize or higher in the exam will be directly admitted to university, and those who win a consolation prize will be directly admitted to college, according to the specified subject groups) after graduating from high school as regulated.

The Ministry only awards individual prizes (first, second, third, and honorable mention) for each subject, and the percentage of prizes for each subject from honorable mention upwards does not exceed 50% of the number of participating students; of which, the number of first, second, and third prizes does not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes.
The Minister of Education and Training has issued a directive requesting localities to prepare for the National Excellent Student Examination in a serious and safe manner, to conduct inspections, checks, and supervision of all stages of the examination process, and to promptly detect and resolutely handle any violations.
The Ministry also strictly prohibits the assignment of individuals involved in training or coaching for national teams in any form to any professional duties related to the competition.
The competition will take place over two days, January 11th and 12th.
