(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of July 4, the Government held an online conference to review the work of ensuring traffic safety and order nationwide in the first 6 months of 2017. Comrade Truong Hoa Binh - Politburo member, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee chaired.

Also attending were comrade Truong Quang Nghia, member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Transport; leaders of central ministries and branches.

In the first 6 months of 2017, there were 9,593 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 4,134 people and injuring 7,935 people. Compared to the same period in 2016, traffic accidents decreased in all 3 criteria: number of accidents (636 accidents: 22%), number of deaths (229 people: 5.25%) and injuries (1,004 people: 11.32%). There were 38 provinces and cities with a decrease in the number of deaths due to traffic accidents and 22 provinces and cities with an increase in the number of deaths due to traffic accidents compared to the same period.

Authorities nationwide inspected and handled 2.2 million cases of road traffic safety violations, fined 1.3 trillion VND, detained nearly 19,000 cars, nearly 300,000 motorbikes, revoked nearly 200,000 driving licenses; prosecuted 2,074 cases, 1,965 defendants, People's Procuracies at all levels proposed to prosecute 1,780 with 1,824 defendants; People's Courts at all levels tried 1,787 cases with 1,841 defendants. On railways and inland waterways, the accident situation decreased significantly in all 3 criteria.

In Nghe An alone, in the first 6 months of 2017, there were 129 traffic accidents in the province, killing 96 people and injuring 101 people. Compared to the same period in 2016, there were 11 fewer accidents (7.86%); 3 fewer deaths (3.03%); and 4 fewer injuries (3.8%). Of which, there were 120 road accidents, killing 91 people and injuring 97 people; there were 9 railway accidents, killing 5 people and injuring 4 people.

After listening to reports from ministries, branches and localities on the traffic safety situation and proposing solutions to reduce traffic accidents, comrade Truong Hoa Binh commended the efforts in ensuring traffic safety and order.

However, it is also necessary to frankly admit that in the first 6 months of 2017, there were still 23 particularly serious road traffic accidents, causing 21 deaths and 110 injuries. This shows that the work of ensuring traffic order and safety needs to be given more attention.

In order to reduce traffic accidents in all three criteria in the last 6 months of the year, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that all levels and sectors need to step up propaganda work and tighten management of water transport and railway vehicles... Step up inspection and review of driver's license issuance, increase traffic patrols and controls, and deploy solutions to restore urban order...

The Permanent Deputy Prime Minister requested that ministries, branches and localities continue to review "black spots" with high potential for traffic accidents to eliminate them, especially for localities with an increase in the number of traffic accidents in the first 6 months of the year, and need to quickly come up with solutions to reduce traffic accidents. In addition, it is necessary to attach responsibility to the heads in ensuring traffic safety and order.

He requested units and localities, especially leaders, to uphold their sense of responsibility, contribute opinions, especially point out existing shortcomings, weaknesses and causes, thereby proposing practical solutions to better implement the work of ensuring traffic safety in the coming time, and to prevent traffic accidents, especially involving passenger cars...
