More than 60% of electronics businesses violate overtime regulations

The results of inspections of electronic enterprises show that more than 60% of enterprises violate regulations on overtime. In addition to working overtime beyond the prescribed time, many enterprises have not fully implemented salary and meal policies for overtime workers.

This information was given at a seminar on promoting sustainable employment in electronics enterprises in Vietnam recently organized by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

According to the report of the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, through the inspection of 216 enterprises operating in the electronics sector, 1,798 violations were discovered, an average of 8 violations discovered per enterprise.

For serious violations of labor laws, the inspection team drew up administrative violation records for 27 enterprises and reported to the competent authority to issue administrative penalty decisions, the total administrative penalty amount was 1,418 billion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Tung - Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs said that common violations of electronic enterprises include: Contract content does not ensure regulations, does not fully demonstrate the rights and obligations of employers and employees; does not conduct periodic dialogues at the workplace every 3 months; does not count the number of employees working with strict requirements on labor safety; does not organize labor safety and hygiene training or inadequate training; does not make a labor safety and hygiene plan...

Mr. Nguyen Tien Tung stated: “All electronics businesses work overtime, of which more than 60% of businesses violate overtime regulations. Due to the nature of the electronics industry, which works on orders, there are times when there is no work, and other times when there is a rush of work.”

Regarding the issue of overtime at electronics enterprises, through inspection, it was discovered that, in addition to working overtime beyond the prescribed time, overtime regimes at many enterprises have not been fully implemented such as: Insufficient salary payment or meal regime not guaranteed...

“Working overtime causes many workers to become exhausted, so employers need to pay more attention to this issue,” Mr. Nguyen Tien Tung emphasized.

In addition to the violations of employers, workers at 26 out of 216 inspected enterprises also did not fully use the personal protective equipment provided when performing their work.

The Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs has identified 2017 as the year of specialized inspection in the electronics sector. Common violations in the electronics sector have been made public in the press and media for businesses to overcome in the coming time. In 2018, the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs will focus on inspecting safety violations in mineral exploitation for construction production.
