Automatic manual transmission - things drivers don't know
Automatic manual transmission has the same structure as manual transmission but does not have a clutch pedal, the car changes gears automatically.
AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) is a manual transmission but operates electronically. Vehicleno clutch pedal, gear shifter is not R-1-2-3... but looks like automatic gear shifter. The timing of gear changes is not decided by the driver but by the vehicle itself, which calculates and chooses the appropriate timing. When the engine rpm and speed are sufficient to shift gears, the computer automatically disengages the clutch, then shifts gears, and finally re-engages the clutch.
The advantage of this gearbox is that it works like an automatic gearbox, but at a cheaper cost to manufacture. However, AMT has limitations that some drivers are not aware of. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of gearbox.
Disappointing compared to automatic transmission
If you have driven an automatic car before, you will feel disappointed when driving an automatic manual car. The operating mechanism is similar to a manual car, but the driver cannot actively change gears, so it does not meet the needs of speed enthusiasts. However, if it is your first time driving an AMT car, you can be satisfied with the convenience of driving because it is no different from an automatic car.
Automatic manual transmission also has other names such as ASG, Tiptronic on car lines in Europe. |
Affordable and easy to repair
Due to the simplicity of the automatic manual transmission, it costs less than a conventional automatic transmission. In addition, the repair and maintenance of an AMT transmission also costs the same as maintaining a manual transmission.
Use fuel efficiently
Cars using AMT are essentially manual transmissions with automatic clutches, so it does not reduce the fuel efficiency of the car. Cars using AMT have fuel efficiency levels comparable to manual transmission cars.
Maintains some manual transmission functions
Since they are based on manual transmission systems, AMT cars do not have features like parking, hill start assist or hill descent assist. Handbrake is still a mandatory feature on cars using this transmission.
Allows driver to increase/decrease gear
On the AMT gearbox, the option to increase/decrease gears can still be performed by the driver himself through the gear lever (+/-). This can be imagined as riding a motorbike without a clutch.
Easy to move in crowded city
In crowded streets, at slow speeds, the AMT gearbox automatically shifts to a lower gear, making it easier for the driver to move and reducing transmission wear.
Use the gearbox to reduce speed
When going downhill, the driver can downshift to a lower gear to let the transmission system slow down, then the vehicle can still be controlled safely without having to brake too much.
