Despite losing early, Huddersfield did not collapse but instead rose up to attack strongly. For most of the first half, the home team dominated MU. Huddersfield also created dangerous opportunities, typically Tom Ince's shot that went across MU's goal in the 6th minute.
Huddersfield were so focused on attacking that they almost paid the price at the end of the first half. In the 45th minute, Ashley Young broke through on the right wing and crossed inside for Mata. The Spanish midfielder skillfully got past goalkeeper Lossl and finished into the Huddersfield net.

Mata had a goal disallowed for offside. |
All members of MU celebrated Mata's "goal" but that joy was delayed by referee Kevin Friend. Friend called for the help of VAR (virtual assistant referee) because he suspected Mata was offside when receiving the pass from Young. After careful review, the king in black concluded that Mata was offside and did not recognize the goal for MU.
But the Red Devils fans did not have to wait too long to celebrate the second goal. Just 10 minutes after the break, Lukaku once again helped MU double the gap. From Sanchez's pass, Lukaku sprinted strongly into the Huddersfield penalty area and then fired a left-footed shot into the goal.
