(Baonghean.vn) - For several days now, severe drought has been occurring in many areas of Hung Nguyen district, especially in Hung Yen Bac and Hung Yen Nam communes.
The two communes of Hung Yen Nam and Hung Yen Bac are located in the outer areas of the district, drawing water from the Nha Le canal, Thach Kien dam, and Khe Ngang dam. Although many localities experienced widespread rainfall, this area received no rain, causing all reservoirs and dams to dry up. Nearly 100 hectares of summer-autumn rice in Hung Yen Nam and 120 hectares in Hung Yen Bac lack irrigation water.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Yen Bac commune, said that Hung Yen Bac has nearly 300 hectares of summer-autumn rice. While 90% of the 2015 summer-autumn crop has been completed, 170 hectares are severely affected by drought. Of these, 120 hectares benefit from the water source of the Khe Ngang dam, but currently, the dam no longer has water for irrigation. In response to this situation, the district and commune People's Committees are mobilizing manpower, pumps, and dredging the Nguyen Van Troi canal… to provide irrigation for the 120 hectares of rice currently in the flowering stage.

Mr. Hoang Duc An, Head of the Agriculture Department of Hung Nguyen District, said: In the 2015 summer-autumn crop season, the entire district planted 4,750 hectares out of the planned 5,500 hectares, leaving 750 hectares unplanted due to water shortages. Some communes, such as Hung Thinh, only planted 15% of their area, and Hung Loi 30%. Due to the drought, the rice did not bloom evenly, resulting in a record-breakingly long harvest period for the summer-autumn rice crop in Hung Nguyen, expected to last from August 15th to October 20th. Currently, some communes with favorable water sources from the Lam River have begun harvesting, and these areas are generally experiencing a good harvest, with yields reaching 55-60 quintals/hectare. Meanwhile, in the highland communes lacking water, some rice plants have only just finished tillering and flowering.
