If Nghe An has more than 2,600 hectares of summer-autumn rice damaged by heavy rains, Hung Nguyen district alone accounts for over 1,200 hectares. Currently, people are focusing on the second crop production, closing the area.

The biggest early crop loss in many years

On June 6, Mr. Phan Dinh Duc in Hong Linh hamlet, Hung Thong commune used a tractor to re-cultivate the land to sow summer-autumn rice. His family had 4.1 hectares of rice fields, but the heavy rains over the past 2 days (May 30 and 31) flooded and completely damaged more than 2.1 hectares. "The heavy rain came when the rice had just been sown for 2-3 days, and some fields that were sown in the afternoon had rain in the evening."

Right after the water receded, he went to the field to work the land, but due to the large area of damage, today is the 4th day and Duc has only sown more than half of the area, expected to finish sowing before June 8. The damage is so great, so of the 1.2 quintals of seeds used this time, Duc has agreed to use spring rice for production, in addition, he has to buy 21 kg of Bac Thinh rice to have enough seeds.

In previous years, the fields in Hung Thong commune were occasionally flooded due to short rains at the beginning of the summer-autumn crop, but Mr. Tran Quoc Dung, also in Hong Linh hamlet, said that the rice had never been damaged as much as this year.

The family has 18 sao of rice, of which 6 sao have to be re-sown. "The rice was sown on the 3rd day and then flooded, so we had to re-plant. We mainly sowed sticky rice and Bac Thinh rice, so the cost of seeds is quite expensive," said Mr. Dung.

This year, the spring rice crop was bountiful and the price was good, so farmers were excited to produce summer-autumn rice. In the plan, Hung Thong commune strived to plant 240 hectares of summer-autumn rice, but in reality it increased to 255 hectares. Before the rain, the whole commune had planted 220 hectares, but heavy rain damaged nearly 140 hectares.

According to Mr. Bui Le Duan - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee: As soon as the water receded, the land was cleared and re-sown immediately, so by June 6, the whole commune had sown 240 hectares, most of the damaged area of nearly 140 hectares had been re-sown by the people, and it will be finished in a few days.

Urgently resume production, ensure seasonal schedule

The unusually heavy rain, the biggest in many years, occurred right at the time when Hung Nguyen district had just finished planting the main tea crop and the new rice had been sown for 1-5 days.

The whole district has planted more than 2,200 hectares of rice, but nearly 2,000 hectares are heavily flooded, of which more than 1,200 hectares must be replanted, mainly in the communes of Hung Dao, Hung Thong, Hung Nghia, Hung My...

The district has focused on mobilizing all resources and means to drain water, dredge canals, clear water flows, open the entire drainage system in the area, save rice from prolonged flooding, and limit damage.

Thanks to that, more than 800 hectares of rice were "saved" in some higher areas in the communes of Hung Thanh, Hung Tan, Hung Xa... After the rain, farmers focused on splashing water to wash the leaves so that the rice plants could photosynthesize well; fertilized early, used biological products to help the rice plants recover quickly, stimulate new roots...

With more than 1,200 hectares of damaged rice that had to be replanted, Mr. Hoang Duc An - Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: The district has focused on directing and mobilizing people to quickly prepare enough short-term rice seeds, with a growth period of 95-100 days such as Khang Dan Mut Mut, NA2, Thien Huong 6, Khang Dan 18, Hung Thanh 10... to replant in time for the season; the amount of seeds to replant is up to more than 55 tons of seeds. Currently, Hung Nguyen district is reviewing the damage situation, submitting an official report to provide support to the people.

Up to now, basically the damaged summer-autumn rice areas in Hung Nguyen district have been and are being re-sown by farmers, expected to be completed before June 8, still ensuring the summer-autumn production schedule.
