Hungary is ready to share 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas with Ukraine.

Edina Lakatos, spokesperson for the Hungarian gas pipeline operator Foldgazszallitas (FGSZ), said on April 8 that the company is ready to supply 6 billion cubic meters of gas to Ukraine, subject to available capacity and existing contracts.

The gas will be transported via a dedicated pipeline with a capacity of 16.8 million m3/day (equivalent to 6.1 billion m3 of gas per year).

Lakatos was quoted as saying: “Since March 2013, the FGSZ has had all the technical and legal conditions to transfer gas to Ukraine. The gas transfer has always taken place via a dedicated pipeline, not through a ‘virtual’ supply via the pipeline used to import gas from Russia.”

Earlier on April 5th, Alexei Miller, CEO of the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, stated that the idea of ​​organizing a "reverse" gas supply from the European Union (EU) back to Ukraine raised many questions: that a real reverse supply is unlikely to happen, and that the legality of a "virtual" reverse supply needs to be discussed.

To supply natural gas to Ukraine, Hungary needs to store gas on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border according to its gas supply contract with its Ukrainian partner.

In such cases, FGSZ will supply the required amount of gas based on the available pipeline capacity and in accordance with applicable regulations.

Earlier, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Minister Yuriy Prodan stated that due to an agreement with Gazprom, Slovakia could not fully implement the "reverse" gas supply to Ukraine.

The current contract for purchasing natural gas from Russia at preferential prices has been suspended, leaving Ukraine facing a severe gas supply shortage.
