Huong Giang responds to controversy about competing in Miss Universe 2025

Affirming the mission when participating in Miss Universe 2025
At the press conference before the Miss Universe 2025 contest, Miss Huong Giang spoke frankly about the controversy surrounding her being a transgender person participating in this beauty arena. She affirmed that she had completed the application according to the requirements of the organizing committee after discussing directly with the national director.
When asked if a transgender person participating would take away opportunities from other women, Huong Giang emphasized that being a woman is not just about appearance or biological sex, but also about love and the spirit of being true to yourself. "I am not taking anything away from other women who are defining the strength and success of women in all circumstances. This is not just a contest for a beautiful girl anymore. That era is over," she affirmed.
Demonstration of diversity and equality
Concerned that transgender people could dilute the color of Miss Universe, Huong Giang cited the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations to 2030, which always emphasize gender equality and reducing inequality. She believes that her presence, as well as that of mothers or married women, is a testament to the diversity that the contest is aiming for.
"My appearance does not take away the color of Miss Universe, but is also an important factor waiting to prove that they create a real playground towards diversity around the world," Huong Giang emphasized.
Views on age and participation goals
Responding to the question of whether at the age of 33 she should "give way" to the younger generation, Huong Giang said that this is unfair. "During my 13 years in the profession, no one has ever given me any opportunity. It's all the result of my efforts since I was 20 years old," she shared.
She also affirmed that the purpose of participating in the contest is not to increase popularity, but to give the world an opportunity to change its perception of the transgender community. "When the purpose is clearly defined, winning or losing is no longer important," she said.
Journey "Beyond the Crown"
Looking back, Huong Giang mentioned important milestones such as becoming the first transgender person to appear on national television at Vietnam Idol 2012 and then being crowned Miss International Queen. She said participating in Miss Universe was unbelievable.
"I cannot guarantee where this journey will go. But if I have the opportunity to increase my influence, I will not do it alone. I am carrying the hopes of many people," Huong Giang affirmed. She also said that she will consider other Asian representatives as her younger sisters to keep her spirit as comfortable as possible during the competition.
