Poverty escape from passion fruit trees in border areas
(Baonghean.vn) - From initial results, Tuong Duong district (Nghe An) has developed passion fruit area to reach the planned area of 500 hectares by 2020. This is the tree that helps many households in the district's border areas escape poverty.

Up to now, Tuong Duong district has planted 60 hectares of passion fruit in the border communes: Nhon Mai, Mai Son and Tam Hop. The first season's income, productivity reached over 15 tons/ha, with a price of 8,000 VND/kg, each hectare brings in an income of 120 million VND/year. In Nhon Mai commune alone, 48 hectares are planted in Huoi Co and Tham Tham villages.
With that initial effectiveness, on the morning of November 3, Tuong Duong district organized a workshop between passion fruit growers and related businesses. This workshop had the participation of Secretary of the District Party Committee Pham Trong Hoang; Chairman of the District People's Committee Nguyen Van Hai and departments and branches of the district, Youth Volunteers Team, and representatives of Nafoods Passion Fruit Joint Stock Company.

According to the plan, by 2020, Tuong Duong district will develop passion fruit area to reach 500 hectares with an estimated value of over 150 billion VND. If such development is maintained, along with the participation of enterprises, people in remote areas will escape poverty. That is the affirmation of all levels of Tuong Duong district.
At the workshop, from the opinions and wishes of the people, Tuong Duong district clearly analyzed the responsibilities of the relevant parties, from people registering to plant to technical support, fertilizer seeds, trellis making to coordination in purchasing and consuming products.

Faced with the strong development of passion fruit growing movement, with many households registering to plant new trees, the leaders of Tuong Duong district requested the district's branches and communes to strengthen planning management, avoid encroachment on land for other crops, and especially strictly prohibit encroachment on forest land.
Tuong Duong district also researched policies and integrated project programs with a budget of over 5 billion VND to support people growing passion fruit (including seed costs, trellis construction, soil treatment, etc.).
During the implementation process, the district assigned agricultural and extension officers to coordinate with communes to closely follow the area, instructing people on how to plant and care for passion fruit trees to achieve the highest efficiency.
