Hyundai recalls nearly 155 thousand Sonata cars due to airbag defect

A total of 154,753 2011 Hyundai Sonatas have just been recalled by the Korean automaker, in the US market alone.

Problem related to airbag system not deploying in the event of a collision.

Specifically, the front and side airbags and seat belt tensioners are disabled, making them unable to ensure the safety of vehicle occupants in the event of an accident.

Hyundai is forced to recall a total of 154,753 Sonatas for repairs. The recall program will start from April 20.

The Sonata is a popular car in the US. In 2011 alone, Hyundai sold 225,961 units, up from 196,623 the year before. This figure accounts for a large portion of the 538,228 Hyundai vehicles sold in the US in 2010 and 645,691 in 2011.

In 2016, Hyundai sold a record 768,057 vehicles in the U.S., nearly double the number of vehicles sold a decade ago. In addition to the Sonata, the smaller Elantra sedan and the larger Santa Fe crossover are Hyundai's best-selling vehicles in the U.S.

The recalled Sonatas are the 6th generation, introduced in 2009 and discontinued in 2014. The Sonata line is currently in its 7th generation.
