Indonesia caused an earthquake when it defeated Thailand.
Despite being behind, consecutive goals in the middle of the second half helped coach Alfred Riedl's team come from behind to win 2-1 at home on the evening of December 14.
Thailand are the only team with a perfect record in this year's tournament, up to the match in Bogor (Indonesia). In the semi-finals, the defending champions showed their authority by crushing Myanmar with a total score of 6-0, and Indonesia itself tasted defeat 2-4 when the two teams met in the group stage.
Therefore, it was no surprise that Thailand took the lead in the 33rd minute, from Teerasil Dangda's flying header in the penalty area.By approaching the match calmly, the away team still showed that they were better than their opponents even though they were playing away.Coach Kiatisuk's students could have increased the gap in the first half if Chanathip Songkrasin or Sarawut Masuk had been more careful in their finishing.
This goal was Dangda's sixth goal at the 2016 AFF Cup, helping him consolidate his leading position in the race for the Golden Boot. The Muangthong United striker has won this title twice before, but both times, Thailand lost in the AFF Cup final (in 2008 and 2012). To date, Dangda has never won the Southeast Asian championship. This curse made Thai fans even more worried when witnessing what happened in the second half.
The lead caused Thailand to slow down, allowing Indonesia to mount a series of sieges. In the 65th minute, the home team unexpectedly equalized. This was a somewhat lucky goal by Rizky Pora when his long-range shot deflected off Tristan Do and changed direction, leaving goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan helpless.

Thailand is rated higher than Indonesia. |
Six minutes later, Hansamu Pranata jumped high and headed the ball into the far corner of the Thai goal. This moment seemed to make the audience at Pakansari Stadium explode. Before that, Pranada had skillfully coordinated with Boaz Solossa, before unleashing a shot that hit the Thai player and went wide. From the corner kick that followed, the goal came to the home team.
This was the first time the defending champions had been behind in the 2016 AFF Cup and they were unable to equalise. Despite adding striker Siroch Chatthong, who played very well in the second leg of the semi-final against Myanmar, Thailand's attacking play in the final minutes did not have many breakthroughs.Coach Kiatisuk did not dare to let his players risk pushing up their formation against the strong momentum of the home team after scoring two consecutive goals. After all, he and his players still had a home match.

After squeezing through a narrow gap, Indonesia is causing many surprises. |
A 2-1 defeat is not a disaster for Thailand, considering what they did at home in the semi-final against Myanmar. However, in a year when football fans have witnessed the rise of underdogs with determination as their main weapon, such as Leicester in the Premier League or Portugal at Euro 2016, Indonesia are proving to be a model. In their four previous finals, they have never succeeded.
