Police said there were 129 passengers, mostly tourists, on board the ferry when the accident occurred. The explosion injured 25 passengers, but fortunately, none were seriously injured. The injured passengers were reportedly from France, the UK, Italy, the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
Prior to the Indonesian authorities' announcement, a spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that four Australian citizens were injured in the accident. However, these individuals had already left the hospital after receiving treatment.
The initial cause of the accident is believed to have originated from the ferry's fuel tank. According to Maritime Police officer Khoirul Anwar, the second explosion shattered windows and ricocheted fuel onto the passengers' seats. At the scene of the accident, seats were overturned and scattered everywhere.
Ferries are a frequently used means of transportation between the 17,000 islands of Indonesia. And the country also frequently experiences ferry accidents due to inadequate maritime safety conditions.
