A spokesperson for the North Sumatra provincial police said the prisoners set fire to the prison due to dissatisfaction with the "frequent power and water outages." Hundreds of police officers were on the scene to control the situation and hunt down the escaped prisoners. Prison sources said some of the escaped prisoners were incarcerated for terrorism offenses.
At the time of the riot, there were approximately 2,600 inmates in the prison. Police and prison security personnel have increased security to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
