On the afternoon of October 7, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize went to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his efforts to end the more than 50-year conflict in the South American country, which has killed 220,000 Colombians and forced 6 million to flee their homes.

On August 24, after four years of persistent negotiations with the efforts and goodwill of the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) along with the support of mediators, the two sides reached a peace agreement.

Although, in a referendum on October 2, the majority of Colombian voters rejected the peace agreement signed between President Santos and FARC leader Timoleón Jiménez, President Santos still affirmed his determination to pursue peace and national dialogue.
