Global Internet connection could "collapse" in the next 48 hours

Internet users around the world may experience some difficulties accessing online services and websites over the next 48 hours, as key servers that manage domain names and the infrastructure that controls the web will be shut down for a period of time.

According to news agencyRT(Russia), the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the agency responsible for managing the IP address space and managing the top-level domain name space (the domain name extension, located after the “.”), will implement a change in the encryption key that helps protect the Domain Name System (DNS).

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a system that helps convert domain names that are easy for humans to remember (in character form, for example www.example.com) into the corresponding physical IP address (in number form, for example 123.30.151.72) of that domain name. To make it easier to understand, DNS can be seen as a "phone book" of the Internet world, capable of searching and translating domain names into IP addresses.

According to the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), changing the encryption key will help increase the security, stability and flexibility of the domain name system. However, this may also affect some Internet users during the encryption key transition.

“To be clear, some Internet users may be affected if their network operator or service provider is not prepared for this change,” a CRA representative said.

According to Eldar Murtazin, an analyst at the Russian research firm Mobile Research Group, Internet users may have difficulty accessing online services and websites in the next 48 hours. This may include not being able to access the Internet at all or having to access it at slower speeds than usual.

However, in reality, the error may only occur in theory or affect only a very small number of users, as ICANN has conducted preliminary tests that show that the encryption key change will only cause minimal problems. Technology experts also reassure users that it will not cause any serious problems and they may not even notice the change.

The process of changing the encryption keys for the Domain Name System is necessary in the context of increasing threats to attack the Internet infrastructure. There have even been cases in the past where hacker groups have vowed to bring down the Internet globally by attacking the Internet infrastructure managed by ICANN.
