Will iPhone 8 have increased water and dust resistance?

A new leak suggests that Apple's next-generation iPhone will be water and dust resistant to rival Samsung's flagship phones.

Will the iPhone 8 be upgraded?

According to the Korea Herald, the upcoming iPhone models will be IP68 certified, meaning they will be more water and dust resistant than their predecessors, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (which only achieved IP67). If this information is correct, it means the iPhone 8 will be upgraded to be as water and dust resistant as the Galaxy S7 and, expectedly, Samsung's Galaxy S8.

With an IP68 rating, the number "6" means that the new iPhones will remain "immune" to dust. Not a single particle can penetrate the shell and stick to the internal components of the device. Meanwhile, the number "8" means that the device can withstand being submerged in 5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes like the Galaxy S7.

In theory, IP67 devices like the iPhone 7 have the same dust resistance, but less water resistance, only "surviving" when submerged in 15cm - 1m of water for 30 minutes. However, some real-world experiments show that Apple's 2016 flagship model is even more water resistant than advertised.

Apple describes the iPhone 7 as “splash and water resistant,” but it warns that this is not a permanent guarantee and may degrade over time. It also does not cover liquid damage under warranty.
