Washington reimposed sanctions on Tehran in May after President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 international nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
“Submitting to the US-led West would be a betrayal of our faith… and would be a betrayal of the future generations of this region,” Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live on state television while attending an international conference on Islamic unity in Tehran. “We have a choice: either roll out the red carpet for criminals, or stand up strongly against injustice and remain faithful to our Prophet Mohammed, the Koran and Islam,” he said, referring to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states that have close ties with Washington.
Iran and Saudi Arabia are regional rivals, backing opposing sides in conflicts in Syria and Yemen as well as different political forces in Iraq and Lebanon.
President Rouhani emphasized: "We are ready to protect the interests of the Saudi people against terrorism, aggression and superpowers... and we do not demand the amount of 450 billion USD from this action," referring to the value of the contract between Riyadh and Washington./.
