So far, 136 Iranians are believed to have been killed and 102 injured in the stampede in western Saudi Arabia, AFP quoted the head of Iran's pilgrimage organization, Said Ohadi, as saying.

Mr Ohadi told state television that 344 Iranians were still missing, two days after the disaster. "The list of missing Iranians has been handed over to the Saudi authorities," Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said.

According to Press TV, Mr. Ohadi also said that "based on the latest announcement from Saudi Arabian officials, the number of people killed in the incident in Mina is about 2,000 people."

Iranian Culture Minister Ali Janati has led a delegation to Saudi Arabia to follow up on the situation of those missing and injured in the September 24 stampede at Mina, near Mecca. He will also oversee the repatriation of the bodies, which will take place early next week, according to local media.

Iranian leaders have condemned the Saudi government, saying the tragedy was caused by a lack of safety measures. "This is not just incompetence, it is a crime," said Iran's Attorney General, Ebrahim Raeisi.

"We will demand that the Al-Saud (Saudi Arabia's ruling family) be tried for crimes against pilgrims in an international court," Mr. Raeisi said. He also called on the Saudi government to "bring those responsible to justice."
