According to Fox News, the Shahab-3 ballistic missile was launched on July 25 from southern Iran. After flying about 960 km north, the missile fell into a desert not far from the capital Tehran.
"We are aware of reports of a projectile launched from Iran, and have no further comment at this time," the official said, according to Fox News.
News of the missile launch comes at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and the West.
The situation became more serious when on July 19, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized the British-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz on charges of "violating international maritime regulations". According to the IRGC, the tanker was escorted to shore for investigation.
