According to the British newspaper The Independent on June 16, the decision to deploy 4,000 soldiers from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was made just before the Iranian presidential election on June 14, in which reformist candidate Hasan Rowhani won.

The Independent, citing sources close to Iran, reported that Iran, a strategic ally of Syria, has proposed opening a new "Syrian front" in the Golan Heights against Israel to protect President Assad's regime. However, the Iranian government has not yet issued an official comment on this information.

This move comes after the US announced it would provide military support to rebels in Syria and accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons in the current conflict.
