The Boeing 737, operated by Ukraine International Airlines, crashed on the outskirts of Tehran, Iran, shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred hours after Iran launched a missile attack on US forces in Iraq.

Iran denied that a missile had shot down the plane a few days earlier. However, citing intelligence sources, the US and Canada later stated that they believed Iran had shot down the aircraft.

The plane, carrying 167 passengers and 9 crew members, was scheduled to fly to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. However, just minutes after takeoff, it crashed. Among the victims were at least 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, and 82 Iranians.
