The governments of Iran and Argentina have applied to join BRICS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her personal Telegram channel.

“While the White House is busy thinking about what else it can interrupt, ban and destroy in the world, Argentina and Iran have applied to join BRICS,” Ms. Zakharova wrote.

Earlier on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced the application to join the association.

As Yurry Ushakov, Assistant to the President of Russia, noted, Moscow has a positive view on the expansion of BRICS, but at the same time suggests that it is necessary to first define the procedure and requirements for countries that can become candidates.

"BRICS" is the name of a group of major emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Because they feel they are not being represented properly in their new positions in international organizations, they have created a new forum to express their interests and plan common activities within the group.

BRICS Summit

Last week, the association's 14th summit took place under the chairmanship of China. On the first day, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the conference via videoconference.

On the second day of the conference, a discussion session was held on the theme of building a partnership for global development in a new era to jointly implement the 2030 agenda on sustainable development. The conference was attended by not only the leaders of the 5 BRICS countries, but also the heads of several guest countries, including Argentina and Iran.
