Protests in Iraq spread to most southern provinces, with clashes between protesters and security forces leaving at least four people dead.

Protesters in Basra, Dhi Qar and Najaf provinces took to the streets to protest high unemployment and demand the government ensure electricity and safe drinking water for people as well as step up reforms and fight corruption.

Protests began in Basra province when dozens of protesters stormed the Basra provincial capital despite government-imposed curfews and security measures against protesters.

In Najaf province, hundreds of protesters stormed the airport. Protesters burned down several local government offices.

Iraqi security forces have imposed a curfew and used heavy weapons such as live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters. The commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces has ordered security forces to be on high alert in southern provinces to prevent protests.

Security sources said the government had sent reinforcements from the counter-terrorism unit and the 9th Division to Basra province to help protect the oil fields.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has dismissed several officials in Basra province for poor management, and said the government will spend money to help Basra improve electricity, water and health services.

This money will be allocated to improve water sources, electricity supply, and provide necessary and useful health services. The government will also expand and accelerate construction investment in the fields of housing, schools, and services./.
