IS confirms leader is dead

(Baonghean.vn) – On July 13, QAMA, a group affiliated with the Islamic State organization IS, confirmed that Tarkhan Batirachvili, also known as Abu Omar Al-Chichani, one of the most wanted IS leaders, was killed in Iraq.

According to a military source, QAMA announced that Abu Omar Al-Chichani was killed in the city of Sherqat, Iraq while participating in the battle to expand the area in the city of Mosul, the IS stronghold in northern Iraq.

Last March, the US announced that it “possibly” killed Omar in northeastern Syria.

However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) later claimed that Omar survived the airstrikes and was "seriously injured".

Abu Omar Al-Chichani, who is often identified by his black cap and distinctive long red beard, was a former Georgian soldier 30 years ago.

He fought against the Russian army in 2008 before joining IS and becoming one of the leaders of this extremist terrorist organization.
