Israel and Hezbollah unexpectedly cease fire, tensions in Hormuz ease.
Following airstrikes and bloody fighting, Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon reached a ceasefire agreement on June 19.
The ceasefire is fragile.
According to AFP, the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect immediately. The agreement was reached through mediation by the US and Qatar following negotiations with both Israel and Iran.
Before the ceasefire was announced, southern Lebanon experienced a bloody day of fighting. Lebanese authorities reported 47 deaths in Israeli airstrikes. Tel Aviv, for its part, confirmed the deaths of four soldiers and stated that it had attacked more than 80 Hezbollah targets on June 19 alone.
The atmosphere on the ground remains highly uncertain. Lebanese state media reported that immediately after the ceasefire was announced, Israel carried out an airstrike on the Jezzine area in the south of the country.
However, Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter immediately and strongly refuted this. On social media, he asserted: "At 11:30 this morning (June 19), Israel suspended all offensive operations. The contrary statements from Hezbollah and Iran are completely fabricated."
Ambassador Leiter emphasized Tel Aviv's commitment to the ceasefire, but with the firm condition that "Hezbollah must respect the agreement and cease hostilities."
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared he would make the Iranian-backed Hezbollah pay a "very heavy price," while Italian National Security Minister Ben Gvir even made extremist statements about attacking Lebanon. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of essentially wanting to perpetuate a "perpetual war."
US-Iran negotiations have stalled.
The volatile situation in Lebanon has directly dealt a blow to the overall peace process. The first round of direct talks between US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, scheduled to take place at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland, has been officially postponed indefinitely. The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed the postponement but reiterated its readiness to support and facilitate discussions.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei tried to calm public opinion by saying there was "no urgency" to hold the meeting immediately, but the plan would still proceed "in the coming days".
Against this backdrop, the diplomatic front shifted to the US-Lebanon dialogue channel. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Aoun emphasized the urgent need for Israel to end its attacks on Lebanese territory through a comprehensive ceasefire. In return, Secretary Rubio reiterated Washington's firm stance: Lebanon must take steps to disarm Hezbollah forces in order to regain full control of its territory.
Both sides are expected to continue their negotiating efforts at a round of talks taking place in Washington from June 23 to 25.
Positive signals in the Strait of Hormuz
One of the core points of the US-Iran agreement is the reopening of borders.Strait of Hormuz- The lifeline for global energy transportation.
Data released on June 19 by maritime tracking firm AXSMarine showed that 25 commercial vessels passed through the strait on June 18 alone – the highest number since mid-April.
At the same time, the US military confirmed it had lifted the naval blockade of Iranian ports, although US warships "will remain present in the vicinity."
On Tehran's side, the Iranian maritime authority announced that all ships wishing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz now only need to submit a transit permit application "48 hours in advance".
