(Baonghean.vn)- On July 25, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that Israel will have to pay a heavy price in the conflict related to the security measures it imposed at the entrance to the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Speaking to Parliament, President Erdogan said: “Israel has not shown respect for the Aqsa Mosque and the Haram al-Sharif complex (which Jews call the Temple Mount), so it will suffer the most damage.”

“I am aware of Israel’s decision to remove metal detectors, and I hope everyone will comply. We hope Israel takes steps for regional peace,” the Turkish leader said.

Israel installed metal detectors at the compound's entrance after two police officers guarding al-Aqsa mosque were shot dead on July 14. The security move has deepened the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

On July 24, the Israeli Cabinet announced that it had decided to remove the metal detectors and replace them with “smarter” and less intrusive surveillance measures. However, Palestinians opposed the new measures and called for a return to the status quo before July 14.

Tensions in Jerusalem have sparked protests in Türkiye. Turkish media reported that protesters broke down doors and threw stones at a mosque in Istanbul. President Erdogan called for calm and said attacking places of worship was a “big mistake”.

President Erdogan discussed with his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin. During the discussion, Mr. Erdogan stressed that Muslims who visit al-Aqsa mosque cannot be treated as terrorists. He also stated: “We also cannot accept Jews who visit synagogues and temples being treated as terrorists.”
