Jakarta declares outbreak due to Indian variant

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has just announced a new outbreak of Coronavirus infections due to the active spread of the Indian variant.

"In the past week, the number of cases increased by 50% to 17.4 thousand. The situation in the capital requires maximum attention and if it continues to increase, we will have to take tough measures, as was used in September or March," said Mr. Anies.

The Straits Times newspaper reported on Monday, citing sources from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, that the Indian variant of the coronavirus (the “Delta” strain according to the new classification of the World Health Organization) has dominated in Jakarta and some cities in the Central Java province, home to more than 32 million people. In addition, they said the occupancy rate of inner-city hospitals increased during the week from 45% to 75%.

During the pandemic, the Indonesian government did not impose a nationwide lockdown, restrictions were imposed by local government leaders. The most serious was in Jakarta, where the epidemiological situation was always difficult. In total, more than 1.9 million people have been confirmed infected with the virus in the country, of which more than 52.7 thousand people died.
