Italy had to accept a 1-1 draw with Poland in the first round of the UEFA Nations League.

Goals: Jorginho 78' penalty - Zielinski 40'

The home advantage was not enough to help Italy dominate Poland, a team that was weaker in terms of tradition and experience. Apart from a few inaccurate long-range shots, Roberto Mancini's team did not create any truly dangerous attacks in the first 30 minutes. Italian fans had to wait until the 36th minute to witness a scoring opportunity, when Bernardeschi curled the ball wide of the post with his left foot.

In contrast to Italy's lackluster play, Poland counterattacked more effectively thanks to the experience of striker Robert Lewandowski. The visitors had a clear scoring opportunity in the fifth minute, when Lewandowski passed the ball to Piotr Zielinski, who ran down and shot past goalkeeper Gianni Donnaruma in a one-on-one situation.

Failing to learn from their first escape, Italy paid the price as the first half drew to a close.Lewandowski was still the one to start the game with a cross that completely eliminated the home team's defense, while Zielinski - the striker who currently plays for Napoli - appeared at the right time and place on the right side of the penalty area to volley home the opening goal.

Poland deservedly took the lead after two clear chances.

Being behind at home made Italy play with more effort in the second half. With a cohesive play style, coach Mancini's team gradually created the necessary pressure to force the Polish defense to make mistakes. In the 52nd minute, Bernardeschi once again put the opponent's goal in an alarming position when he curled the ball from a distance, causing it to go around the post.

After putting in a lot of pressure, Italy finally achieved their goal in the 78th minute. After Jakub Blaszczykowski tackled Federico Chiesa from behind in the penalty area, the referee awarded the home team a penalty. Chelsea midfielder Jorginho rescued Italy with an accurate 11m kick to level the score at 1-1.

A draw at home is not a happy result, but at least Italy has got their first point in Group 3 of Nations League A. On September 10, coach Mancini and his team will face a bigger challenge when they visit the remaining opponent in the group, Portugal.
