Juventus dominates Champions League quarter-final first leg team of the year

April 14, 2017 15:30

The first leg of the 2016/17 Champions League quarter-finals has ended with victories for Juventus, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Monaco. Here are the standout performers in each position.

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)

Despite facing the fearsome MSN trio (Messi, Suarez, Neymar), goalkeeper Buffon still had a brilliant day, helping Juventus destroy Barcelona with a score of 3-0. This was a match in which Buffon made many impressive saves, such as situations where he denied opportunities from Suarez or Iniesta.

Right-back: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Real right-back Dani Carvajal did an excellent job both defensively and offensively. It was his superb cross that allowed Ronaldo to score the opening goal in Real's 2-1 comeback win at Bayern.

Center back: Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus)

Not only did center-back Chiellini help Juve keep a clean sheet against Barca, he also made an accurate header to seal a 3-0 victory for the Old Lady of Turin.

Center back: Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

Deserving to be the rock in front of Atletico's goal. In the match where the Spanish capital representative beat Leicester with a minimum score, Godin won 5 aerial battles. His superb aerial ability made the strikers of the English Premier League champions "turn off the lights".

Left-back: Alex Sandro (Juventus)

Competing against Lionel Messi is a huge challenge for any defender, but Juventus' Alex Sandro showed no signs of being fazed. His ability to keep the Argentine attacker at bay was enough to earn him a place in the team of the year.

Left midfielder: Saul (Atletico)

Thanks to Saul, Atletico dominated the midfield and defeated Leicester. According to statistics, in this match, Saul had 3 attacks on the opponent's goal and won 3 aerial battles.

Central midfielder: Shinji Kagawa (Dortmund)

Showed no fear after the bombing near the Dortmund bus. In the make-up match, although Dortmund lost 2-3 to Monaco, this Japanese midfielder left his mark on both goals scored by the home team.

Right midfielder: Miralem Pjanic (Juventus)

Midfielder Miralem Pjanic was outstanding in Juventus's stunning win over Barca, making three dangerous passes, one of which led to Chiellini's third goal.

Right forward: Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

He was the brightest star in Juventus' win over Barca when he scored a double. Both of Dybala's finishing shots against the away team were perfect.

Center forward: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Like Dybala, Ronaldo also scored a double in the last match. Not only that, he was also the main factor causing Bayern defender Martinez to receive a red card. With one more player, of course, everything became much easier for the Spanish Royal team.

Left forward: Kylian Mbappe (Monaco)

18-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe scored twice in Monaco's 3-2 win at Dortmund, making history as the youngest player to score a brace in the Champions League knockout stages.
