Serial killer John 'Sonny' Franzese is freed at the age of 100 due to good behaviour while serving his sentence.

On the afternoon of June 23, serial killer John 'Sonny' Franzese, the oldest inmate in the federal prison system in Devens, Massachusetts, was released at the age of 100 for good behavior while serving his sentence.

John 'Sonny' Franzese is serving a 50-year sentence for bank robbery. His son Michael says his father is planning to live with his daughter in Brooklyn.

U.S. Bureau of Prisons records show he has been paroled at least six times since his 1967 conviction, but has ended up in prison.

“He was a one-of-a-kind guy,” said former FBI agent Robert Lewicki, who was nicknamed “The Godfather” for falling asleep during his own trial.

In 2005, Lewicki convinced Franzese's son, John Jr., to set a trap to capture his father.

Franzese killed 60 people. The FBI said the murderer intended to “take revenge” on his son after learning he was cooperating with the government.

Franzese was a regular at the Copacabana nightclub and once financed a classic porn film.

Authorities said someone revealed that he had bragged about mass killings and said he would never be caught.

Franzese's life of crime began in 1938, when he was arrested as a teenager after an assault. In 1947, he was convicted of raping a waitress in her garage. In 1966, he was charged with murder and dumped in the bay with a concrete block tied to his feet.

Police confirmed that the killer Franzese was the second in command of the Colombos, one of five Italian-origin family crime gangs in New York.
