According to the indictment, on the evening of July 27, Tran Van Giang came home drunk and was scolded by his wife. Giang explained that he had gone drinking with his grandfather and uncle, but his wife still did not accept it. Angry, Giang went to get a bottle of gasoline standing in the corner of the house, poured it on his wife and children, and set them on fire.

Burned, Giang's wife - Nguyen Thi Oanh Dam (born 1993) carried her child to the well. Giang ran after her to get water to put out the fire for his wife and child. Neighbors heard the cries for help and ran over to take Dam and the child (born 2014) to the emergency room. However, due to severe burns, the two victims died later. Tran Van Giang was arrested.

During the investigation, it was found that Tran Van Giang had a history of epilepsy, so the Provincial Police Department requested a forensic psychiatric assessment of this suspect. The results of the forensic psychiatric assessment by the Central Institute of Forensic Psychiatry showed that "before, during and at the time of the assessment, the suspect Tran Van Giang showed signs of personality and behavioral disorders due to alcohol use. During the course of the crime, the suspect had limited cognitive and behavioral control. At the time of the assessment, the suspect had sufficient cognitive capacity and limited behavioral control."

At the trial, Tran Van Giang confessed his crime and said that his epilepsy relapsed, making him unable to control his actions. After the incident, the defendant was haunted by the death of his wife and child, unable to sleep many nights, and deeply regretted his crime. The defendant also hoped to receive leniency from the law and try to reform himself so that he could soon return home to take care of his first child, who is just over 3 years old.

The representative of the Provincial People's Procuracy determined that the crime committed by the defendant Tran Van Giang was extremely serious, including murder and infanticide. However, the defendant had no previous criminal record and at the time of the crime showed signs of personality and behavioral disorders. When he saw his wife on fire, he scooped water to put out the fire and save her. The legal representative of the victim asked for a lighter sentence for the defendant... The representative of the Provincial People's Procuracy requested a sentence of 19-20 years in prison for Tran Van Giang.

The panel of judges determined that Giang’s crime was extremely serious, taking two lives at once, taking the life of a child… and needed to be dealt with severely. However, the defendant was entitled to many mitigating circumstances according to the law, so the panel sentenced Tran Van Giang to 20 years in prison./.
