Extend 3 more years to compile new textbooks

The National Assembly has voted to extend the compilation of new textbooks by three years to ensure the quality of the books meets the requirements of educational reform.

On the afternoon of November 21, the National Assembly voted to pass the Resolution adjusting the roadmap for implementing the innovation of general education programs and textbooks with 438/446 National Assembly deputies participating in the vote in favor (accounting for 89.21%).

Previously, Deputy Secretary General of the National Assembly Hoang Thanh Tung presented a draft Resolution adjusting the implementation roadmap of Resolution No. 88/2014/QH13 dated November 28, 2014 of the National Assembly on innovation of general education programs and textbooks.

Accordingly, the deadline for applying the new general education curriculum and textbooks in a rolling manner is no later than the 2020-2021 school year for primary schools, from the 2021-2022 school year for middle schools, and from the 2022-2023 school year for high schools.

The Government directs the development of new general education programs and textbooks, ensuring that funding does not increase; at the same time, it allocates sufficient resources and synchronously prepares conditions for teachers, education managers, and facilities to implement the new general education programs and textbooks. When all conditions are prepared, the Government shall report to the National Assembly the time to apply the general education programs and textbooks according to the roadmap specified in Article 1 of this Resolution.

The National Assembly Standing Committee, the National Assembly's Committee on Culture, Education, Youth, Adolescents and Children, the Ethnic Council, other National Assembly Committees, National Assembly delegations, National Assembly deputies, People's Councils and People's Council deputies at all levels shall supervise the implementation of the new general education curriculum and textbooks within the scope of their responsibilities.

The Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and its member organizations conduct social supervision and criticism of the implementation of the new general education curriculum and textbooks.

New textbooks will be taught in 2020

Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture, Education, Youth, Adolescents and Children Phan Thanh Binh presented the Verification Report on postponing the implementation of the new general education program and textbooks.

The majority of National Assembly deputies agreed to postpone the implementation of Resolution 88 and change the implementation of the new general education curriculum and textbooks in a sequential manner, with the first year applied to the first grade of primary school, the second year to the first grade of middle school, and the third year to the first grade of high school. The application of the new general education curriculum and textbooks will be completed after 5 years from the year of implementation./.
