Latest EURO 2024 results: Germany sets record with big win over Scotland

EURO 2024 opened with a record at the Allianz Arena (Munich, Germany) on the morning of June 15. The German team delighted fans with an impressive victory over Scotland. This was the opening match of EURO with the biggest score difference in the history of the tournament.

The team nicknamed "Die Mannschaft" took just 10 minutes to open the scoring. The author of the first goal of EURO 2024 was Florian Wirt. The 21-year-old midfielder became the youngest player in the history of the German national team to score at the European Championship finals.

Ten minutes later, Jamaal Musiala, also 21, scored against Scotland. The home team's other striker, Kai Havertz, made it 3-0 at the end of the first half with a penalty kick.

In the first half, the German team had 65% possession, 20 attacks, 339 passes (93% accuracy). The home team had 6 shots, all on target, scoring 3 goals. This was the first time the German team had led 3-0 after only one half in a EURO match.

Scotland failed to muster a shot in the first half, and things got even tougher when defender Ryan Porteous was sent off for a stamp on Ilkay Gundogan in the build-up to the penalty at the end of the first half.

After the break, the German team still controlled the match. With the advantage in numbers, the home team was even more dominant. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a leisurely match without having to face any shots from the opponent.

Niclas Fullkrug (who replaced Havertz in the second half) scored his first EURO goal with an unstoppable shot. The Dortmund striker had the ball in the Scottish goal again shortly after but was ruled offside.

Scotland didn't manage to get a shot off but still scored in the match. The Scottish player's header hit Antonio Rudiger and the ball changed direction and flew straight into the German goal. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer couldn't save his teammate from the own goal.

However, the home team still ended the match with a 4-goal difference. In the last minute of extra time, Emre Can made a low but very dangerous long-range shot to seal a 5-1 victory for the German team.

The European Football Championship - EURO 2024 has officially expanded the number of participating teams from 16 to 24 since 2016. EURO 2024 will officially kick off on June 15 in Germany.

There will be 10 stadiums in 10 German cities hosting matches at the EURO 2024 finals.
