(Baonghean.vn) - The 2020 V.League and National First Division will return from June 5 with a new competition format. The results of phase 1 will not only determine the rankings and groups, but also the home and away rights in phase 2.

Time of event

After two rounds of matches played without spectators, the tournament was postponed indefinitely. VPF plans to resume the tournament on June 5. The tournament will end on October 31 to ensure the national team can concentrate. The First Division will take place from June 6 to September 26, 2020, while the National Cup is scheduled from May 23 to October 31, 2020.

Are spectators allowed in the stadium to cheer?

In the VFF Executive Committee Meeting, the issue of whether to allow spectators into the stadium to watch the V.League immediately when the tournament returns has not been decided. The Vietnam Football Federation - VFF and VPF will work with localities, depending on the Covid-19 situation to decide after May 19.

Specifically, VPF requested that clubs and match organizers proactively report to local competent state management agencies on plans to organize national professional football tournaments in 2020, and proactively coordinate with local health agencies to develop plans to ensure disease prevention and control for members on duty and spectators, and report to the Tournament Executive Board for support and coordination in implementation.

The role of first leg results

The 2020 V.League National Championship will take place in 2 phases, of which phase 1 will take place exactly like the first leg in the traditional way, including 13 matches. Currently, V.League 2020 has passed 2 rounds and there are still 11 more matches to close phase 1.

Phase 1 is divided into 2 groups, group A includes the 8 top teams and group B includes the 6 bottom teams. The top teams will compete in a round robin (7 rounds) to compete for medals and the championship team. The teams ranked below (group B) will compete for relegation, with only 1 team being relegated.

According to the initial agreement, the results and points earned by the clubs in phase 1 (first leg) will be canceled when entering phase 2. And phase 2 will start calculating points again from the beginning with the purpose of determining the high and low for the entire season.

However, the bottom-ranked teams like SHB Da Nang are at a disadvantage, VPF is considering whether to keep the teams' scores the same or replay the first two rounds or not? The final decision will be announced by VPF in the near future when the tournament's return is near.

Home advantage

The points on the rankings of the teams in the first phase will not be counted in the second phase. However, the team with a higher position after the first 13 matches will have priority in terms of match schedule (playing more at home, meeting stronger teams at home). For example, the team ranked higher will play 4/7 home matches. Therefore, the rankings after the first leg for the 14 clubs in the V.League are very important.

Time to register additional players

According to the original regulations of the V.League 2020, the mid-season registration period for phase 2 is from June 23 to July 20. Each club is allowed to replace up to 3 players. Clubs that have not officially registered 30 players in phase 1 will be allowed to add up to 5 players in phase 2. The maximum number of players of a club after addition is 30.

From June 23, players who are eligible to be replaced or added will be able to compete immediately after completing the registration procedure. With the changes to the V.League 2020 schedule and the application of a new competition format, the above time may also be changed, depending on FIFA's transfer regulations.
