Opening Ceremony of the 2013 Asian Broadcasting Conference
The region's only international event offering in-depth discussions on the field of radio broadcasting opened on the afternoon of July 29th at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi.
The RadioAsia 2013 conference, themed “Radio and Society: Future Development Trends,” attracted hundreds of domestic and international delegates, including radio station leaders, media scholars, and industry managers.
Attending the opening ceremony were Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Director General of the Voice of Vietnam Nguyen Dang Tien, Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Association (ABU) Javad Mottaghi, Secretary General of the Asian Media Communication Centre (AMIC) Martin Hadlow, along with Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Bac Son, Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh, and leaders of central ministries and agencies and the city of Hanoi.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2013 Asian Radio Conference.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Conference, the Prime Minister highly appreciated the role of radio in general and the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) in particular. The Prime Minister said: “Since its inception, radio has always been one of the most popular and effective media in transmitting information and has made a positive contribution to development both nationally and globally.”
The Prime Minister emphasized: “The strong development of science and technology, including digital technology, and the explosion of social media have given the public more opportunities to access information in a more diverse way and are gradually changing the media landscape globally as well as in each country. This is truly a favorable opportunity for the development of all press agencies, radio and television stations, but it is also a direct and increasingly significant challenge that requires us to always be dynamic, creative, and cooperate more effectively to meet the ever-increasing demands of society as a whole.”
Founded by ABU in 2006, RadioAsia has quickly become a prestigious forum for delegates to share their countries' radio development experiences, discuss the mission of radio in addressing global issues, and the challenges facing the development of the radio industry itself.
RadioAsia had previously been held in four countries: Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Indonesia.

General Director of Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Nguyen Dang Tien delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the Conference.
This year's event features nine thematic sessions and several side workshops, focusing on social media, public engagement via the internet and mobile devices, and the role of technology in enhancing the competitiveness of radio broadcasting in the new context.
Immediately following the opening ceremony, the conference will continue with its first session, featuring presentations by leading broadcasters and experts.
Speakers will share their perspectives on topics of widespread interest such as Radio on the path to development: Integration into a new era, Multimedia for digital radio, Killer applications for radio, Interacting "online" with listeners, Storytelling and visuals on air, Folk culture in Vietnamese radio, Radio: Friendly producers – Creative listeners…
On the sidelines of the conference, workshops were held on topics such as “Social media, mobile media and radio program planning: New techniques for “legacy” communication,” and “The role of radio in emergency warning.”
