The 6th Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Association was solemnly inaugurated.

The Sixth National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Association has the theme "Unity, Innovation, Proactiveness, Integration, and Sustainable Development".

This morning, July 1st, the 6th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Association was solemnly inaugurated at the My Dinh National Convention Center in Hanoi. Attending the opening ceremony were General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and former leaders of the Party and State; along with 1,180 delegates representing approximately 10.5 million farmer members nationwide.

The 6th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, themed "Unity, Innovation, Proactiveness, Integration, and Sustainable Development," is an important event aimed at evaluating the results of implementing the Resolution of the 5th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Association for the 2008-2013 term; setting forth directions, objectives, tasks, and solutions for the Association's work and the patriotic emulation movement of farmers for the 2013-2018 term; adopting the revised Charter of the Association; and electing the 6th Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association for the 2013-2018 term.

In his opening remarks at the Congress, Comrade Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Member of the Central Committee of the Party and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, stated: During the past term, with self-reliance, self-improvement, and creativity, members and farmers nationwide have overcome many difficulties and challenges, achieving great successes in agricultural development and the construction of new rural areas. Under the leadership of the Party, the support and facilitation of the State; and the coordination and assistance of the Fatherland Front, various sectors, organizations, and businesses, the activities of the Vietnam Farmers' Association have made new strides in gathering and mobilizing farmers nationwide.

Reporting at the Congress, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, Ha Phuc Mich, stated that the highlight of the Farmers' Association's activities in the past term was the innovation of its working methods, focusing on strengthening the work of gathering, uniting, and mobilizing with the expansion of activities such as guidance, consultation, services, vocational training, and support for farmer members to develop production and business, increase income, and improve their lives.

Every year, millions of members at all levels achieve the title of excellent farmer in production and business at various levels. In the movement of farmers competing to build new rural areas, the associations at all levels have mobilized farmers to donate land and contribute trillions of dong and tens of millions of man-days of labor…

During the past term, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association admitted more than 2 million new members, bringing the total number of members to over 10 million, an increase of 4.4% compared to the previous term.

To build a strong association capable of uniting, promoting democracy, and fostering creativity among its members and farmers, the next term will focus on thoroughly understanding the Party's viewpoint on strengthening and renewing the Party's leadership over mass mobilization work in the new situation; Resolution 26, 7th Conference of the 10th Central Committee on agriculture, farmers, and rural areas; and the National Target Program on building new rural areas.

In his keynote address at the Congress, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong commended the great achievements of the peasant movement and the Vietnam Farmers' Association during the past term.

The General Secretary stated: The Vietnam Farmers' Association needs to thoroughly grasp and deeply understand the guiding viewpoints and ideas of the Party's 11th National Congress Resolution, the Political Platform, and the socio-economic development strategy in the new era; regularly review the implementation of Resolution 26 of the 10th Party Central Committee; the practical activities of the movement; and the legitimate aspirations of farmers in order to advise the Party and the State on policies and take concrete measures to bring the Party's viewpoints, ideas, and policies into life.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized: “The Farmers' Association needs to do even better in its propaganda and mobilization work, gathering all strata of farmers, promoting the tradition of patriotism, hard work, and creativity, and effectively implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, and the State's laws and regulations. At the same time, it must care for and protect the legitimate rights and interests of farmers, create conditions for Farmers' Association officials to study, learn vocational skills, apply scientific and technological advancements, access markets, and improve their skills to become key players in the process of agricultural development and building new rural areas.”

This afternoon, the Congress continued to focus on discussing and deciding on key tasks to effectively guide the implementation of the project "Enhancing the role and responsibility of the Vietnam Farmers' Association in agricultural development, building new rural areas, and building the Vietnamese peasant class in the period 2010-2020".
