Archaeologists have discovered a 650-year-old circular temple in Mexico's capital Mexico City, the Guardian reported on November 30.
The excavation site was discovered two years ago, after a mid-20th century supermarket was demolished.
“Early archaeologists unearthed many pieces of pottery and human remains,” said Pedro Francisco Sánchez Nava, coordinator of the Mexican Institute of History and Anthropology.
As they dug deeper, they unexpectedly found the circular foundation of the temple, about 10 meters in diameter and more than a meter high. Much of the temple’s original white plaster was still intact. The archaeologists also recovered many ceremonial items, including bird bones, volcanic glass, cactus spines, and ceramic statues of monkeys and platypuses.
"This is believed to be a place of worship for the wind god Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl. This discovery will provide information about how the people of Tlatelolco, Mexico, worshiped one of their important gods," said Sánchez.
