What will the autopsy of the American student held by North Korea reveal?
If investigators were allowed to perform an autopsy on Otto Warmbier, the American student who recently returned from North Korea, what would they find?
What happened to Otto Warmbier while he was in North Korean custody remains a mystery. After Otto's death, his parents asked investigators not to perform an autopsy on their son.

Otto Warmbier was arrested during a tour in January 2016 and charged with subversion after allegedly stealing a banner at the Yanggakdo International Hotel in North Korea. |
Therefore, the Ohio State Investigation Agency, USA, only conducted an external autopsy instead of a full autopsy of Otto Warmbier's body, according to the family's wishes.
"We respect the family's decision and only conduct an external autopsy. At this time, we have no conclusion as to the cause of Warmbier's death," said Daryl Zornes, coroner's office in Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.
Forensic experts say autopsies can reveal important information about how and why a person died. In Warmbier's case, it could help determine what happened to the young man before he returned home in a coma.
Dr. Cyril Wecht, a famous pathologist in the US, said that not performing an autopsy is a big mistake. "If there is anything unusual other than natural death, then an autopsy must be performed," he said.
According to Mr. Wecht, it is difficult to determine what led to the student's coma because the victim was in a coma for a long time and the brain continued to be destroyed.
Factors that could have led to the condition include strangulation, suffocation or drugs, and it is also possible that the man tried to commit suicide but did not die. However, the most basic cause was lack of oxygen, he added.
