Ms. Pham Thi Hue, 43 years old, the owner of the house, added: In the past, when we did not have the conditions to build a house for cows, every time there was a big flood, our family had to take the cows to the other side of the Ta Lam dike to take refuge. Later, when we were better off, she and the villagers thought of a way to build a 2-storey house, with the lower floor used as a cow barn and the upper floor used as a warehouse for storing straw. When there was a flood, the cows were brought to the upper floor. The stairs leading to the upper floor were designed to be wide enough to easily take the cows up. Photo: Le Thang |

Before that, in 2002, when there was a big flood, her family had to take the cow to a neighbor's house. At that time, families who could afford it built flood-proof houses from wooden pillars and bamboo, not as solidly as they do now. Photo: Le Thang |
