Survey to determine the composition and names of some ethnic groups in Nghe An

Que Phong has 14,328 households/66,734 people of ethnic minorities. Of which, the Thai ethnic group accounts for the majority with 60,177 people, accounting for 90.2%. The Mong ethnic group has 3,826 people, accounting for 5.7%; the Kho Mu ethnic group: 2,592 people, accounting for 3.9%. The remaining ethnic groups such as Tho, Tay, Chut... have 139 people, accounting for 0.2%. Ethnic minorities mainly live in extremely difficult communes, the poverty rate is high, accounting for 98.4% and accounting for 43.95% of the total poor households in the district. Currently, there are 8 villages without electricity grid with 1,168 households not using electricity.

Regarding the Mong ethnic group in the district, there are 645 households with 3,826 people. Of which, 506 households live along the border. In 2021, there are still 500 poor households, 74 near-poor households, life is very difficult.

After consulting with respected elders, representatives of the villages proposed that the villagers use the name “Mong” instead of the name of the Hmong ethnic group, to make paperwork and procedures easier and more consistent with the national language. The working group has compiled the opinions to present to the National Assembly in the near future./.
