When to change wipers on car?

Windshield wipers help you ensure visibility while driving, remove dirt, rainwater and even trash on the windshield, so you are not distracted while driving. In Vietnam, the tropical climate with hot sun and cold rain makes this part deteriorate quite quickly. So how do you know when it is time to replace the wipers on your car?

Wipers help you see clearly when driving in the rain and also clean the windshield when it is covered with dust.

Normally, in hot tropical climates like in Vietnam, wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months to a year to ensure effective use.

However, you should not be too rigid with the timing. Some of the signs below may signal that you need to replace the wiper blades, as hot conditions cause the lifespan of this part to quickly deteriorate:

Horizontal streaks or streaks appear on the glass after wiping: The quality of the rubber wiper blade is degraded due to dirt, temperature and bacteria, causing the rubber to age quickly.

There are areas within the wiper's operating range that are missed: The wiper blade is warped, not pressed against the windshield surface.

The wiper vibrates and makes noise when operating: The spring on the wiper arm is weak, not enough to create pressure for the wiper blade to press against the windshield.

How to change wiper blades properly?

It would be very simple if you are willing to open your wallet to take your car to the garage to replace the wiper blades. This is a fairly simple job that does not require a highly skilled mechanic to be able to do. However, taking your car to the garage will make you wait, have to pay for a service for a job that, if you research, is a completely simple job.

There are many types of car wipers available on the market, with quite diverse prices, from 60,000 - 500,000 VND with all kinds of origins.

The following steps will help you replace the wiper blades on your car yourself without having to go to the garage to ask a mechanic to replace them.

There are many types of wipers on the market today, with different sizes and structures, but all are based on the design platform of using a steel (or synthetic plastic) wiper arm, a rubber wiper arm and blade (nowadays many companies integrate both the wiper arm and the blade into one). Replacement can be selected to replace only the rubber wiper arm or if a spring error is detected on the wiper arm, then both the wiper arm and the blade need to be replaced.

The most common structure of a car wiper

- Before replacing the wiper or blade, the first thing you must pay attention to is the car model you are using to be able to buy the right type. If the spare parts store is large, you just need to read the car model name and year of manufacture and the seller can provide you with the right type.

- If you only need to replace the wiper blade, you should pay attention to the structure of the wiper blade and the length of the wiper arm (if it is the type attached to the wiper blade) so that you can use it effectively when replacing it.

Example of how to replace the wiper blades on a 2000 Toyota Camry:

Pull the wiper lever away from the windshield and hold it firmly to avoid it from slipping and hitting the windshield.

Gently squeeze the latch to release the wiper blade from the wiper arm, then remove the old wiper blade.

Put the wipers back on the windshield but be sure to leave a cloth or rubber pad on to avoid breaking/scratching the glass.

Use a clean cloth to wipe the windshield and wiper arm clean before installing the new wiper arm. Install the new wiper arm, making sure the latch between the arm and the wiper arm is in the correct position, then gently place it back on the windshield.

Some notes:

- You can choose to replace the entire wiper blade; or a more economical option is to replace only the rubber wiper blade, when the wiper blade is still usable (enough pressure to press the wiper blade to make full contact with the glass surface).

- To avoid damage to the wiper blades, do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. Do not use gasoline or solvents to clean the wiper blades.

- Do not use dirty water as windshield washer fluid, use the right type of windshield washer fluid (with the recommended formula in the vehicle's owner's manual). Check the windshield washer fluid filter (available in the tank), add coolant regularly to increase the life of the windshield washer pump.
