When should IVF be done?

Infertility is the inability of a couple to conceive naturally after one year of regular sexual intercourse without using any contraceptive methods. For women over 35, this period is 6 months.

According to research, the cause of infertility is 40% due to men, 40% due to women, and the remaining 20% ​​is unknown.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a technique commonly used in cases of blocked fallopian tubes, severely abnormal sperm (or even no sperm), multiple failed artificial insemination cycles... With this technique, the wife is injected with drugs to stimulate the ovaries. When the follicles reach a certain size, the eggs will be aspirated and combined with the husband's sperm to form embryos. About 2-5 days after removing the eggs, the embryos are transferred to the uterus. The remaining embryos, if of good quality, will be frozen for later use.

Doctor Bach Huy Anh, Center for Reproductive Support, Post Office Hospital (Hanoi) said that the patient's age greatly affects the success rate of the IVF cycle. Normally, the older the age, the lower the pregnancy rate because the quality and quantity of oocytes (eggs) decrease sharply, especially when the age increases over 35. At the same time, the ability to respond to ovarian stimulation drugs also decreases. The percentage of abnormal oocytes increases sharply in elderly women.

The longer the infertility period, the lower the success rate. Many studies have shown that in cases of infertility lasting more than 5 years, the success rate decreases. In particular, those who have been infertile for more than 10 years have a very low rate of pregnancy and live birth after in vitro fertilization.

Therefore, couples of reproductive age should plan to have children soon. If they have not conceived after a year, both husband and wife should go for a medical examination; from there, find the cause early to have a suitable treatment method. After 5 years of ineffective treatment, in vitro fertilization should also be done. For couples with unexplained infertility, the time to start IVF is after 3 years, said Dr. Huy Anh.
