When should you use the steering wheel paddle shifters?

Most automatic cars today have a manual mode, which allows you to change gears at will instead of waiting for the transmission to engage. Depending on the model, the driver may be able to change gears manually using the gear stick and/or the paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

This action does not require a clutch, because there is no mechanical connection between the gear lever or the paddle shifters. They simply act as a switch to send an electronic signal to the transmission to change gears.
