Difficulties in implementing STEM teaching in Nghe An
(Baonghean.vn) - Bringing STEM education into schools is an inevitable trend today, especially in the 2018 General Education Program to encourage students' self-study and creativity and also overcome the one-way imposition and mechanical memorization in teaching as before.
STEM education is an educational approach that integrates the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and hands-on approach.
However, the current difficulty in introducing STEM education into teaching in Nghe An is the lack of a STEM education framework for all levels and grades to be implemented uniformly throughout the province. In addition, during the teaching process, schools lack STEM education materials and STEM education guidance materials for all levels and grades; there is no unified STEM education model for all levels and grades.
Another difficulty is that teachers and educational managers at all levels have not been trained or transferred educational technology.STEM, so understanding and awareness of this issue is still limited.

This reality also affects the teaching process at school. Sharing about this, teacher Nguyen Van Tien - teacher at Do Luong 1 High School said: Although we are very excited about bringing STEM into teaching, the current difficulty is that this subject is not included in the teaching plan distribution structure, not included in official lessons, so the implementation of experimental sessions is still passive.
Meanwhile, teacher Nguyen Viet Luong - Vice Principal of Anh Son Secondary School said: Our school is very interested in STEM education and has a separate STEM classroom for students. However, the current facilities are still limited, lacking many learning materials, so many topics and lessons cannot be implemented and must be replaced by other topics and lessons. Some topics and lessons require a lot of money to buy tools and supplies for students. In addition, because it is a new subject, some teachers have not been trained, exchanged, and studied much, so there are many difficulties and confusion when approaching and implementing the process of building lesson topics.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Huyen Nga - Vice Principal of Ha Huy Tap Secondary School - Vinh City suggested that it is necessary to soon issue documents as a legal corridor for schools to promote and strongly develop STEM activities to bring real benefits to students. The Education sector also needs to organize provincial STEM festivals so that schools and education departments have the opportunity to learn and share experiences with each other.
In order to widely implement STEM education in schools, Nghe An Education Department has also built a project "Supporting the development of a model for applying STEM education programs in schools in Nghe An province".

The project is currently being piloted in 12 schools from preschool to high school and after 2 years of implementation, a STEM education framework has been developed for all 4 levels of education with full information: objectives, requirements for capacity and qualities, output standards, content and time allocation... suitable to the practical conditions of schools in Nghe An province.

The project aims to successfully build a model for applying STEM education programs in schools, contributing to the realization of educational goals and developing students' skills in applying knowledge into practice. After the pilot implementation, we will continue to perfect the program framework, create a legal corridor for mass implementation throughout the province, contributing to improving the effectiveness of management and education quality.
