Previously, as reported by Nghe An Newspaper, at around 9am on April 17, Son was high on drugs and was holding a knife and scissors, threatening passersby. Despite the advice and persuasion of the police and some relatives, Son restrained Nguyen Van Quang (34 years old, cousin) and forced a passerby to hand over his motorbike.

Son forced Quang to wear only shorts and drove him through many streets... Son sat with a knife to the hostage's neck, threatening to use force if he did not obey.

After more than 3 hours of driving on the road in the hot sun, Son asked to go home to rest. When Son asked to smoke tobacco, police officer Nguyen Van Diep quickly "attacked" him, causing him to drop his weapon, rescuing the hostage safely.

Mr. Quang suffered a long knife wound that required 6 stitches and dozens of other scratches on his neck. When he was rescued, he was exhausted and unconscious, and then took anti-HIV drugs.

Son's father said that three days before the crime, he saw his son acting strangely, talking nonsense, and rarely sitting still. When Son restrained Quang, he followed him but was helpless after "saying enough, crying and begging for the hostage to be released". Son also told his father: "Who are you, I don't know anyone...".

He said Son has been addicted to drugs for more than 10 years and has violated the law many times. Now he just hopes that the authorities will educate his son to give up drugs, realize the value of life, and rebuild his life to help his wife raise 3 school-age children.
