Prosecution of the case of transporting rare butchered langurs

Authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against the transport of a rare Hatinh langur that had its fur shaved and dried over fire from Phong Nha – Ke Bang.

On March 7, Mr. Le Thanh Tinh, Head of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park Forest Protection Department (Quang Binh province) issued a decision to prosecute a criminal case on the illegal transportation of an individual Ha Tinh langur, an animal on the list of endangered, precious, rare species that need to be protected.

Previously, at 6:45 p.m. on December 19, 2015, at the Tro Mong Forest Ranger Station Barrier of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Forest Ranger Department (located in the administrative boundary of Phuc Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh), the park's patrol team discovered a TOYOTA car, HIACE model, with license plate 35B-005.11 driven by Mr. Pham Anh Duc (born November 1, 1987), residing in group 3, sub-area 6, Dong Son ward, Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province, leaving the park. The car was carrying a wild animal hidden in a white foam box (without a lid).

According to the initial determination of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Forest Protection Department, the evidence is a dead Hatinh Langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis), its fur was shaved, it was dried over fire and weighed 9kg.

Pham Van Duc initially confessed that this Hatinh langur was transported from a grocery store in the Thien Duong Cave Eco-tourism Area.

Based on the results of the appraisal request of the Quang Binh Provincial Forest Protection Department, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park Forest Protection Department has issued a decision to prosecute a criminal case for violating regulations on the protection of animals listed as endangered, precious, and rare species, as prescribed in the Penal Code. At the same time, the entire case file was transferred to the Bo Trach District Police for further handling in accordance with the provisions of law./.
